Wow! What a fantastic last week of August we have all had! The weather here on the East Coast has been spectacular! Sunshine, warmth and barely a sprinkle of rain. We have enjoyed seeing our friends happy faces on facebook with their kids in tow at various beaches from Southampton to LBI! So of course we are all sad to see it end. But there really won’t be much time to wallow in Back to School blues because yes, summer is coming to an end but next week starts, NY Fashion Week. And nothing is more fun that that! New York City, as amazing as it always is, becomes even more amazing as fashionistas, models, designers, magazine editors and celebrities come from far and wide to see new fashions make it’s way down the runways at Lincoln Center. And we enjoy every chic minute of it. Parities, shows, and fun events…it’s a stylist’s dream week! We are most excited to see the Carmen Marc Valvo show, party with the great team at Bella NYC Magazine and host our own fashion show at Neiman Marcus! AND on another bright note, all the shows will be featuring Spring 2015 fashions. So no time to fret over the end of summer, Spring is right around the corner!!

We here at The Style Duo have often said how confidence is key when talking about beauty and style. And this week one of our fave stylish celebs, Jessica Alba, proved that to be true while suffering a Marilyn Monroe-like wardrobe malfunction outside a Whole Foods store in NYC.

Jessica. dressed in a gorgeous high waisted plum colored skirt, black bustier, and tailored blazer stepped onto a subway grate and suddenly her flouncy skirt flew up from the air blowing from down below. Jessica acted calmly while trying to hold down her skirt and flashed a big confident smile at the papparrazzi eagerly trying to catch this moment on camera.

Now we have all been in uncomfortable situations like this before, although not necessarily having our blowing skirt expose our undies or (gasp) no undies at all! Maybe we spilled red white on our white dress or had a pimple pop up right on our nose before a big hot date. And we could have crawled under a rock in embarrassment or smiled like Jessica did showing the world how confident we were no matter what. And though not always easy to do, the latter is definitely the more appealing and beautiful choice. So whenever you find yourself in an awkward situation, remember to do like Marilyn or Jessica and own the moment with grace and confidence. Because after all …Beauty is being comfortable in your own skin. That or a kick-ass red lipstick!

Summer is our favorite season. We love the weather, going to the beach, and ALL the fabulous warm weather fashions! So if you were on facebook at all this weekend, you too must have been bombarded with pics and videos of everyone with kids at sleep away camp attending visiting day. Families with happy smiling faces and arms around each other. Brothers and sisters who usually fight like crazy, now embracing and getting all teary eyed. It is all very sweet to see. However, we know that visiting day is very stressful for the moms in all these pics. And the reason is, it’s really hard finding the perfect outfit! Now our kids go to day camp so we are not faced with this visiting day dilemma. But we are finding ourselves helping our friends and clients find the perfect visiting day ensembles. Now before social media, even we self-admitted fashion obsessed girls would’ve thought this was a little cray cray. But nowadays when you know your pic will be on display for all the world to see, it makes perfect sense! So here are some tips and looks so you too can look visiting day gorgeous!

TIP #1

Invest in the perfect pair of beaten up denim shorts. A pair that looks like you aren’t trying too hard. You know ones that appear as if you simply cut an old pair of jeans, but probably cost you close to $200. (And make your butt look fab!)

Wear a tank or tee! Sounds so simple but quite the contrary! You need to find a tank or tee with a little something interesting on it. Something that will make you look like a cool mom who has really cute clothes. Try buying one with a cutout, a strategic hole or maybe a little fringe.

A GEM IN ENGLEWOOD

Botox, fillers, chemical peels….Nowadays these are as commonplace as manis & pedis.  We know many that indulge in these anti-aging beauty tricks and while some look nice and rejuvenated, others take it too far!  We’ve all seen the over 50 year old celebrity staring at us on movie screens with that lifeless but wrinkle-less face as if they were 25.

We here at The Style Duo have been hesitant to partake in any of these treatments and here is the reason why…FEAR!  We are scared of looking too stiff and emotionless, fearful of any screw up that can happen from poking large needles into your face and terrified of any bad side effects!  Who knows what is in those things and if they can truly harm you more than help you. So we have relied on expensive face creams, makeup and foggy mirrors to help us feel young and beautiful.  Our minds were made up to never give in until…we met Dr Rabkin.

An old camp friend of ours told us about Esthetica MD in Englewood, the first and only cosmetic medicine and aesthetic practice and facial spa in Bergen County.  She talked about the founder and Medical Director of Esthetica MD, the renowned Dr. Rabkin.  Did he have a magic wand?  Could he guarantee no wrinkles and no pain?  We were skeptical and hesitant.  But with a little persuasion we agreed to meet with him and here is how it went.

The minute we walked into Esthetica MD we knew we weren’t in just any old doctor’s office.   In fact it felt like PARADISE.  We were greeted with modern décor, delicious aromas, and a friendly and beautiful staff.  (all with fabulous skin!)  We forgot that we just walked in from the busy streets of Englewood into this tranquil haven.  We waited a few minutes for Dr. Rabkin and when he came to greet us he was warm and friendly.  And then we whipped out our long list of grueling questions.  “How do you know it won’t look too overdone?’ we asked.  “Does Botox cause deadly diseases?’  “Will we have long lasting results?” Etc Etc.  Dr. Rabkin answered every question with clarity and confidence and immediately put our minds at ease.  He explained that his goal has always been to give women (men too!) a natural and more youthful appearance through these anti-aging procedures.  He talked a lot about balance, proportion and natural attractiveness and even got permission from one of his patients there to show us her before & after pictures.  Wow!  What a difference fillers can make and most importantly so natural and not overdone.

And the icing on the cake was when Dr. Rabkin talked about his non-surgical face lift based on the predictable patterns seen with facial aging. This man was every woman’s dream!  Now as we said earlier Botox, fillers, peels are everywhere but the important thing we learned is to find a doctor you trust.  For us this means, a person who often believes LESS IS MORE!  And Dr. Rabkin fills this bill completely!  He even talked about turning away patients when they wanted to do more procedures than he felt was necessary to give them a beautiful but natural appearance.  We loved that!

The bottom line is we all want to look our best and hold onto a youthful glow as long as we can.  In addition to Dr. Rabkin’s cosmetic medicine services, Esthetica MD has great aesthetic services like brow shaping and makeup application.  And though there isn’t a magic potion to make us look exactly as we did when we were in our 20’s, we believe working with someone like Dr. Rabkin comes as close to visiting the Fountain of Youth as one can get!

“We shared a womb and then a room”… was a quote one of us made at one of our weddings. And tomorrow we celebrate our birthday together as we have the past 21 years. (ok, maybe a few more years than that, but who’s counting?!) ANYWAY, the point is it’s always been a lot of fun sharing a birthday buddy. Whether we celebrated as 8 year olds at an ice skating rink at Sport –o – Rama or with all our favorite girlfriends dancing in our seats as we watched the movie Grease, we always celebrated in STYLE! The exact same birthday outfits were always a must! Matching white mini dresses as we played pin the tail on the donkey when we turned 4 years old at The New City Condominium Clubhouse was the beginning of our white dress obsession. Sporting pink satin pants and tube tops for our disco party was twice as nice! And who could forget those white, puffy, 80’s pantsuits we wore to our Hawaiian themed sweet sixteen at McDougals on Route 17? All in all we made some funny fashion statements and mistakes over the years as we blew out the candles. Even at a young age we knew that on our birthdays it was time to dress up and shine! And we are always smiling and happy to have our best birthday buddy by our side!
